Cruising

Those of you who are lucky enough to have been on a cruise before know that it can be the ultimate vacation experience. Indeed, many people return home from their cruises unable to imagine doing anything else for their vacations other than going on another cruise. It is easy to see why more and more people are deciding to go on a cruise.

You’ve probably thought about going on a cruise yourself at one time or another!! With cruising the world’s oceans becoming cheaper and cheaper, cruising as a vacation is now a viable option for many people. Unfortunately, deciding to go on a cruise is the easy part. After that you will have a number of important decisions to make to ensure that you pick the perfect cruise.

Choosing the perfect cruise

The first question you should ask yourself is: where do I want to go? The stereotypical cruise vacation is a cruise around the Caribbean in a large cruise ship. Just imagine the turquoise blue waters, dolphins leaping around the ship, and the warm sun caressing your skin as you sit on deck enjoying a cocktail with more fruit it in than a Carmen Miranda hat :-) Ah, bliss!!

But this just scrapes the tip of the iceberg as far as cruising goes. You can go on cruises to almost any part of the world. How about taking a cruise up the Alaskan coast to see the ice and watch the whales. Perhaps a cruise around the Eastern Mediterranean holds more appeal, stopping off at exotic ports of call. Maybe you’d be interested in following the eastern coast of Africa to the Middle East and take in some of the worlds history.

Remember that you are not just picking which ocean you would like to cruise in. Most cruises allow you to make side trips inland when the ship stops at a port of call. Many cruise lines offer organized trips at each port of call, or if you’re feeling adventurous you can strike out on your own. Just remember to get back to the cruise ship before it departs for it’s next port of call. If you have always wanted to visit Greece try combining a trip to Greece with a cruise around the Mediterranean.

Along with picking a location, be sure to find a cruise that will give you the experience you would like. Obviously, a small cruise ship touring the fjords off the coast of Norway will result in a very different experience from a large cruise ship meandering around the Caribbean. Each will result in a totally different cruising experience but this is not just about picking the right kind of climate. If you are looking for all night parties and poolside drinks, go on the Caribbean cruise with a cruise line that caters to the party crowd. If you would like a more relaxed trip, curled up under blankets on the deck with a good book, go on the Norwegian cruise.

Also keep in mind that some cruise lines target specific groups. Just as there are cruise ships that will cater to those who want a 24-hour party, there are cruise ships that focus on retirees and cruise ships for families. Family friendly cruises have many children’s activities and places for teenagers to hang out so that the parents can enjoy a relaxing cruise. The Disney cruise line specializes in this style of family cruising.

Paying for your cruise

The most important factor in the price of your cruise holiday is the level of service you will be receiving. If you are on a tight budget it’s not likely that you will be booking a high end luxury cruise. Instead, look at the premium or even mainstream cruise lines. Nowadays there are some great bargains to be had and the internet is a great place to start looking.

The size and location of your cabin can also make a difference to the price. Ocean view cabins, and cabins with balconies command a premium. If you are really trying to make your vacation as cheap as possible, you try choosing a smaller cabin without an ocean view. While your food and cabin may not be as luxurious, you not only will you be able to afford the airfare home, you’ll still get to enjoy the experience of a cruise on a much lower budget.

If you can afford it, try indulging yourself with a luxury cruise and enjoy all the amenities and facilities that come along with staying at a fancy hotel. You’ll have the added advantage that this hotel goes to many exciting and exotic places and you don’t have to drive!!

What to do before you leave on your cruise

While cruises are often all-inclusive, there are a number of things you should confirm before leaving home. First, make sure that the cruise ship is aware of any special dietary restrictions. If your cruise ship will be coming into port, inquire if you need to book any shore excursions in advance. Most importantly, ensure that you have a way to get to the starting point and back again when the cruise is over. Not all cruises depart and return to the same port of call. No matter how great the cruise was, you will likely regret going on the vacation if you end up stranded at the ships last port of call! But ending your cruise vacation with a couple of days in your last port of call is an ideal way to round off your perfect cruise vacation. Happy cruising :-)
